How to buy trend products: quantity, timing, sell-through and risk

Last updated: 02 November 2026

A snack pops up in videos, kids ask for it at the till, and a few weeks later nobody wants it. Trend products bring quick sales, but also the risk of being stuck with stock. This guide shows how to judge trends when buying: when to get in, how much to order, how to tell whether an item is selling and how to keep the risk small.

How a trend plays out

Most trend products follow a similar pattern. First they appear here and there on social media, then the first customers ask for them, and for a few weeks demand is high. At some point it flattens, because the next trend arrives or everyone already has one.

Not every trend disappears. Some products become a permanent part of the range. Spicy snacks such as Takis and Samyang Buldak are an example: Takis Blue Heat, Fuego and Queso Volcano are among the most requested items at MDH in recent weeks.

Other trends live on through variations. With squishies, the Butter Squishy was followed by a wave of crunchy and crispy models, then by dumpling squishies. If you notice early that a trend is continuing in new forms, you can adapt your range step by step.

Spotting the right moment to get in

The most important signal is standing at your counter: customers asking for something you do not stock. If two or three people ask for the same product in one week, that is a clear sign.

Other hints are videos that kids show you on their phones, fellow retailers talking about a new bestseller, or products that keep selling out elsewhere. Our page on TikTok products wholesale shows what is currently in demand on social media.

It is too late when the product is already stacked up everywhere and your customers have long since tried it. You will still sell some, but much more slowly. A good rule: better to start early with a small quantity than late with a large one.

The first order: test, don't stockpile

One case per item is usually enough to start. That means 18 bags for Takis, twelve pieces for the Spinner Ball and 40 packs for Samyang Buldak Carbonara. These quantities are large enough to see how customers react over a week, and small enough that a miss does not hurt.

Rather than a lot of one variety, take several variants in small amounts. With squishies, for example, one case of Butter Squishies plus individual crunchy models such as the Ball Crunchy Squishy or the Crunchy Milky Chocolate Squishy with keyring. You will quickly see which shape your customers prefer.

Since MDH has no minimum order value, you can place these test orders on their own without having to reach a set amount.

Measuring sell-through: numbers, not gut feeling

Whether a trend product is working shows in its rate of sale: how many units do you sell per week? Note the stock level when you fill the shelf and count again after seven days. Many till systems give you this figure automatically.

That tells you how long a case lasts. Empty after one week means you have a hit. Two to three weeks is a solid result. If more than half is still on the shelf after a month, rethink either the placement or the product.

Set a reorder point, for example when a third of the case is left. With delivery within Germany usually taking 24–48 hours, new stock arrives before the shelf runs empty.

Placement: trend products need to be seen

A trend product on the bottom shelf will not sell like one. It belongs at the till, at eye level or in a small corner where new products stand together.

A small sign with the product name helps. Many customers know the item from a video but are not sure what it is called or what the pack looks like. With squishies, an open sample to squeeze often works better than any description.

Limiting the risk

Cash: every case sitting in storage ties up money. Spread your trend budget over several small orders rather than one large one.

Shelf life: with snacks and drinks, the best-before date is ticking alongside the trend. Check it when goods arrive and sell older stock first.

Authenticity: hyped products in particular attract copies and grey-market goods. Buy from a supplier who delivers genuine goods with a proper invoice.

Exit plan: decide when buying what you will do if the trend fades. Leftovers can go as add-ons to other purchases, into gift bundles or into the next suitable season. Our seasonal calendar for retailers shows which season comes next.

Telling long-runners from short hypes

Over time you develop a feel for which products stay. One clue: if the same customers buy an item again and again, it is becoming a staple. If people buy it once out of curiosity, the hype will soon be over.

Special editions, such as those from Red Bull, are a different case. Customers buy them deliberately while the edition is available, so do not put off reorders for too long.

With squishies, it pays to watch how the trend develops. New shapes like the crunchy variants do not necessarily replace older ones but add to them. Our crunchy squishy wholesale page gives an overview.
