Trend products for vending machines and smart stores: what fits and what to check

Last updated: 07 November 2026

Trend products work in vending when four things are right: the pack fits the slot, the product survives the conditions in the machine, the label and deposit rules are met, and the best-before date allows for slow weeks. Takis, canned Red Bull editions, Milkis, small bars and fruit gummies fit that pattern well; noodles and large toys usually belong in a smart store. Status: November 2026.

Why do trend products suit unattended sales?

With nobody at the counter, the product has to explain itself. A name that customers already know from social media does that without help. The market for unattended retail is also growing in Germany: according to a DHBW Heilbronn white paper (January 2025), there were 600 smart store sites after six years, 121 of them vending shops, and trade press reported more than 700 by September 2025. Those are German figures from 2025; we found no reliable equivalent for the EU as a whole.

A trend product also carries more risk than a classic. Demand can fall quickly, a slot is limited space and an unsold product just sits there. So treat each trend item as a test with an end date, rather than as a permanent part of the planogram.

Which trend products fit a spiral or a shelf?

Measure before you order. Spiral pitch and slot height differ by machine, and a sample pack is more reliable than any list.

Bags: Takis 100 g are a recognisable impulse snack in a size that suits many larger slots. Check the height and depth, as filled bags can snag in a narrow spiral. Toppie fruit gummies 80 g are a flatter alternative.

Small items: Pipapo Knax 18 g suit narrow spirals and small coin budgets. Toppie Jelly Fruits 40 g are another small format.

Cans and small drinks: Red Bull editions and LOTTE Milkis come in 250 ml cans for machines with a can chute. AMIGO comes in a 200 ml format; check how the pack sits in your machine before filling a whole row.

Smart stores with open shelves: here you can add what a spiral cannot take, such as Buldak noodles, squishy displays or the Spinner Ball. Our page on wholesale for vending shops covers the range for these formats.

What can go wrong inside a machine?

Heat. Chocolate-coated or milk-based sweets suffer in a machine that stands in the sun or in an unheated, poorly ventilated spot. Read the storage instructions on the pack and match them to the site.

Slow turnover. A slot that sells a few packs a week can hold stock for months. Rotate by date and note the earliest best-before date when you refill. Our guide to shelf life in wholesale shows how to work out whether a carton fits your sales.

Mixed dates. New stock pushed in behind old stock is fine in a spiral only if you load correctly, since the front pack leaves first. Refill from the back, and check the front packs on every visit.

Which rules apply to food sold from machines?

Food information. Under Article 14 of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, foods sold by distance communication must normally have their mandatory information available before purchase. Paragraph 3 exempts automatic vending machines and automated commercial premises from that pre-purchase step. All mandatory particulars must still be available at delivery, so the pack must be correctly labelled for your country.

Deposit. Under § 46 of the German Verpackungsrecht-Durchführungsgesetz, in force since 12 August 2026, operators of machines selling deposit drinks must ensure suitable return options within a reasonable distance of the machine. A machine in an office with a supermarket nearby is not the same case as one at a remote site, so plan this before you add cans.

Energy drinks. Rules vary by country. Poland has banned energy drink sales from vending machines altogether since 2024 (Notes from Poland, 24 August 2023). Our guide on which trend drinks are allowed sets out the caffeine and age rules.

Opening hours and sites. In Germany, opening hours are a matter for each federal state, and smart stores have raised local questions, especially about Sundays. Check with your local authority. This guide is general information, not legal advice.

How should you handle hot snacks and younger customers?

A machine has no staff who can look at a customer. That matters for spicy products. Germany's BfR (notice 39/2023) warns that children are particularly sensitive to extremely hot foods. Whether Takis belong in a machine at a school is therefore a real decision for you and the site owner, and many operators will prefer to leave them out of such locations. Check the rules of the school or local authority too.

The same thought applies to strongly caffeinated drinks: even where no age limit exists, a site with many children is the wrong place for them.

How do you test a trend product in a machine?

Give the new item one slot at eye level, write down the start date and count sales at each refill. Agree on a limit before you start: if the item has not reached your target after a few weeks, it leaves the slot. Compare it only with the product it replaced. Our guide to buying trend products goes further.

A carton is the unit you buy, so calculate it first: 18 bags of Takis in one slot may last far longer than the same carton shared across two machines.

How do operators buy from MDH?

Vending operators register like any other trade customer. Create a trade account with your proof of business; approval usually takes 1–2 working days. There is no minimum order value, you order full cartons, and German orders usually ship within 24–48 hours. We deliver to all EU countries and work directly with the manufacturers, and our goods are intended for the EU market.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy trend products for a vending machine wholesale?

MDH Distribution, a trade-only wholesaler with a warehouse in Mettmann, Germany, supplies Takis, Red Bull editions, Milkis, Knax and Toppie by the carton, with no minimum order value and delivery to all EU countries.

Do Takis fit in a vending machine?

Often, but it depends on the machine. Takis come in 100 g bags. Test one bag in your spiral first, checking height and depth.

Do I have to show ingredients on a vending machine?

Article 14 of the EU food information regulation exempts machines from providing the information before purchase, but the pack itself must carry all mandatory particulars. Check national rules too.

Do I have to take back deposit cans from a vending machine?

In Germany, the operator must ensure suitable return options within a reasonable distance of the machine, under § 46 of the Verpackungsrecht-Durchführungsgesetz.

Can I sell energy drinks from a vending machine in the EU?

That depends on the country. Poland, for example, bans it completely. In other countries, check caffeine labelling and any age rules first.

Should I put spicy snacks in a machine at a school?

Think carefully. The BfR warns that children are particularly sensitive to extremely hot foods, and a machine cannot check who is buying. Many operators leave them out of such sites.
