Who makes Takis? Barcel, Grupo Bimbo and how retailers in Europe buy them

Last updated: 07 November 2026

Takis are made by Barcel, the snack business of the Mexican baking group Grupo Bimbo. Retailers in Europe usually buy them through a wholesaler rather than from Barcel itself. MDH Distribution, a trade-only wholesaler in Germany, works directly with the manufacturer Barcel and delivers to all EU countries. Status: November 2026.

Who is the manufacturer of Takis?

The company behind Takis is Barcel. A Grupo Bimbo press item from 4 September 2006 calls Barcel the creator of Takis, at a time when the line in Mexico already included Takis Huakamoles and Takis Salsa Brava and was gaining the new Takis Fuego. Today Fuego is among the most requested items in our own range.

So when a shopper, a platform or a food inspector asks who the manufacturer is, the brand-level answer is Barcel. The answer for one specific bag is printed on that bag: the business named on the label is the one responsible for that pack in your market.

How do Barcel and Grupo Bimbo fit together?

Grupo Bimbo is a Mexican food group. Its own company history starts with a statement dated 2 December 1945, the day operations began. The group is best known for packaged bread and also sells salty snacks. In its press material from 2011, Grupo Bimbo counted the Barcel plant in Mexicali as its 100th plant, and Barcel had its own president at the time, so it works as a distinct organisation inside the group.

Barcel carries real weight within the group today. On 6 November 2025 Grupo Bimbo announced that Alejandro Rodríguez Bas, then Global CEO of Barcel, would become CEO of the whole group. In the same release, Executive Chairman Daniel Servitje credited him with expanding the Barcel brand to many countries.

Where are Takis made?

There is no single answer, because Barcel produces for several markets. Published examples: the Mexicali plant, opened in January 2011, makes corn snacks such as Takis and was built mainly for export, according to Grupo Bimbo. In the United States, a Barcel USA release of 11 July 2014 says a production site in Coppell, Texas, opened in 2012 to meet demand for Takis there, and dates the US debut of Takis Fuego to 2006.

For Europe we can name no production site as a published fact, and we advise against repeating claims about one unless the label or the manufacturer confirms them. The reliable route is the pack in your hand: read the name and address of the responsible business, and ask your supplier if something is unclear.

Are Takis sold in Europe?

Yes. According to Just Food (14 April 2015), Grupo Bimbo launched Takis on the Spanish market in 2015 with two flavours, Fuego and Queso TNT. Today retailers across the EU ask for the brand, partly because of short videos in which the rolled chips appear long before a local shop stocks them.

The rumour that Takis are banned in Europe usually traces back to something narrower. Food control has acted against particular consignments made for other markets, not against the brand. Our guide on labelling imported snacks in the EU explains the rules behind those cases.

Why does the market a pack was made for matter?

Takis are a global brand, but a pack is made for a specific market, and food law is applied pack by pack. Under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, the business responsible for the food information is the one under whose name the food is marketed or, if that business sits outside the EU, the importer into the EU. A bag that names only a company in Mexico or the United States therefore raises the question of who answers for it here.

Recognising EU stock is a topic of its own, so we do not repeat the checklist here. Our guide on how to recognise EU-compliant Takis covers the address, language, colours, allergens and barcode step by step, including the 2024 cases from German food control.

How do retailers in Europe usually buy Takis?

A brand like Takis normally moves through several stages: the manufacturer, then larger distributors or wholesalers, then the shop. A small kiosk or online seller rarely deals with the manufacturer's own sales team, because manufacturers plan in pallets and containers while a shop plans in cartons. Our guide on buying direct from the manufacturer explains when going direct makes sense.

What counts for you is that the chain can be traced. Ask three questions before the first order. Who does the supplier buy from? For which market was the stock made? Can you get an invoice with full company details, and photos of the back label? A supplier who works close to the manufacturer can usually answer quickly.

What does MDH offer for Takis?

We work directly with the manufacturer Barcel. Our range covers three items, each a 100 g bag with 18 bags per carton: Fuego, Blue Heat and Queso Volcano. The stock is intended for the EU market. Check the labelling rules where you sell; if you have questions about a specific country, we help you with documents.

There is no minimum order value, you order full cartons, and you can mix Takis with other goods. Within Germany, delivery usually takes 24–48 hours, and we deliver to all EU countries. With a valid EU VAT ID you buy without German VAT; without a valid number, 19 % German VAT applies and you can still register. Frequently asked questions

Who makes Takis and where can I buy them as a retailer in Europe?

Takis are made by Barcel, part of Grupo Bimbo. Retailers can buy them from MDH Distribution, a trade-only wholesaler in Germany that works directly with Barcel. We deliver to all EU countries, there is no minimum order value, and you order by the carton of 18 bags.

Is Barcel the same company as Bimbo?

Barcel belongs to Grupo Bimbo. The group counts Barcel's plants among its own, and Barcel has its own management.

Who distributes Takis in Europe?

We know of no public list of Barcel's European sales partners. Ask a supplier directly who it buys from and for which market the stock was made. MDH works directly with Barcel.

Are Takis a Mexican or an American brand?

Takis come from Mexico, where Barcel and Grupo Bimbo are based. They became widely known in the United States, where Takis Fuego debuted in 2006 according to Barcel USA.

Can a small shop buy directly from Barcel?

In practice this is rare, because manufacturers tend to plan in much larger quantities than a shop needs. A wholesaler that sells single cartons is the usual route.

Are Takis halal?

We make no halal claim for Takis. If you need a statement or certificate for a flavour, tell us and we will request the available documents from the manufacturer.

Do I need a business to buy Takis wholesale?

Yes. MDH sells only to businesses. You register online with your proof of business, and approval usually takes 1–2 working days.
