Wholesale for convenience stores and newsagents in Ireland

For Irish convenience stores, newsagents and online sellers, MDH Distribution is a supplier inside the EU single market: a B2B wholesaler with a warehouse in Mettmann, Germany, delivering to all EU countries. There is no customs clearance between Germany and Ireland, because both are in the EU. All you need is a dealer account with proof of business. With a valid Irish VAT number the invoice comes without German VAT; without a valid number, with 19% German VAT. Other countries are listed under wholesale in Europe.

Which Irish businesses buy from us?

Our range suits shops with plenty of passing trade and little space: independent convenience stores, newsagents, forecourt shops, sweet shops, and toy and gift shops. Online sellers belong here as well: TikTok Shop has been active in Ireland since December 2024.

This page covers the Republic of Ireland. Retailers from Northern Ireland should have a quick word with us before registering, so that we can settle tax and delivery.

What works in the Irish market?

Because English is the mandatory language on food, Ireland skips a step that retailers elsewhere have to plan for: translating into a separate national language. You still need to check the labels. Takis (Blue Heat, Fuego, Queso Volcano) and Samyang Buldak can be trialled as a shelf newcomer, since you can start with a single carton.

In toys, Butter Squishies, Crunchy styles and the Spinner Ball are familiar till items. The Dumpling Advent Calendar also comes in English packaging. Halloween is a long-standing tradition in Ireland, so squishies and hot snacks work well as a planned promotion. Flavour details are on our Takis wholesale page.

On sourcing: our company works directly with the manufacturers, in the case of Takis with Barcel. Some of the squishies are made to our own order. Everything is intended for the EU market.

Registering with a CRO document, invoicing with an IE number

Sign-up runs through create a dealer account. Irish VAT numbers start with IE, followed by 7 digits and 1 or 2 letters; older numbers have a letter in second position. The form matches the number against VIES.

Companies upload the Certificate of Incorporation from the Companies Registration Office (CRO). If you trade under a business name, use your Certificate of Registration of a Business Name. Sole traders under their own name submit their registration confirmation from Revenue. We approve accounts within 1–2 working days in most cases, and prices then become visible.

With a valid number the invoice comes without German VAT, and you declare the acquisition in your Irish VAT return. A number that does not show as valid in VIES does not stop you registering, but it does mean 19% German VAT. Your accountant can answer bookkeeping questions, and the basics are in our guide to buying with a VAT ID.

What should Irish retailers know about labels and Re-turn?

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland states that food information in Ireland must be provided in English, and that other languages such as Irish may be added. The legal basis is S.I. 556 of 2014.

For drinks, the Re-turn deposit scheme has run since 1 February 2024: 15 cents up to 500 ml and 25 cents above 500 ml up to 3 litres, for PET bottles and aluminium or steel cans from 150 ml. Every eligible container must display the Re-turn logo. This matters for anyone buying abroad: according to Re-turn, whoever first places such a drink on the market in the Republic counts as a producer, and must register before selling and sign up each product. Importers are expressly included. Retailers must register too.

In practice, settle the deposit question with Re-turn before you buy Red Bull or Milkis in cans. Dry goods such as Takis, Buldak and squishies fall outside the scheme. Our guide on drinks with German deposit sold abroad gives the background. As of November 2026; please read this as information, not legal advice.

How do the goods reach Ireland?

We deliver to the Republic of Ireland, smaller quantities by parcel and larger ones on a pallet by freight. We ask for no minimum order value; the smallest unit is a full carton. For particular quantities we will find a solution by WhatsApp or email.

Collection is possible too, if you already move goods out of Germany with your own carrier. To prove the delivery within the EU, we then need a confirmation of arrival from you. On request we send CE declarations of conformity and test reports for the squishies, and halal certificates for the Buldak items.
