Flavoured toothpicks in retail: what they are, who buys them and what to check
Last updated: 02 November 2026
Flavoured toothpicks are wooden toothpicks infused with flavouring and sold in small tins, mostly as an impulse item at the till. Wunder, the brand MDH Distribution stocks, is made by a family business in Reutlingen, Germany; according to the manufacturer the toothpicks consist of FSC-certified birch wood, food flavouring, vegetable glycerine and the sweetener sucralose, and they contain no nicotine. Sell them as a flavour product, not as a health or quit-smoking aid. Information as of November 2026.
What exactly are flavoured toothpicks?
A flavoured toothpick looks like an ordinary wooden toothpick, but the wood has been soaked in flavouring. Customers keep one in the mouth for a while after a meal, on a drive or during a break, much as others reach for a mint. The manufacturer of Wunder states that a toothpick keeps its taste for up to 30 minutes.
Wunder toothpicks come in a metal flip-top tin of 100 pieces. Perfekto24 GmbH, the company behind the brand, describes itself as a family business from Reutlingen that has been making flavoured toothpicks since 2018. For retailers this is a compact, long-lasting item: no chilling, no breakage risk and very little shelf space.
One practical detail from the manufacturer's FAQ is worth passing on to customers: for the best flavour, an opened pack should be used within about a month. Unopened tins are therefore the right thing to keep in stock, and testers are not a good idea.
What is in Wunder toothpicks, and do they contain nicotine?
According to the manufacturer's FAQ (accessed November 2026), Wunder toothpicks are made of birch wood, food flavouring, vegetable glycerine and the sweetener sucralose. The wood is FSC-certified under licence FSC C106855, and the toothpicks are described as plastic-free. The manufacturer also calls them vegan, sugar-free and calorie-free.
On nicotine the answer is clear: Wunder toothpicks contain no nicotine. The manufacturer says so in its FAQ, and MDH has confirmed it. This matters because customers do ask, and because a nicotine product would fall under very different rules for sale and age checks.
For anything beyond that, such as the exact flavouring for each variety or advice for people with allergies, the reference is the label on the tin and the manufacturer. Do not add details yourself that are not on the pack.
Who buys flavoured toothpicks?
In our experience the buyers are adults: commuters and drivers, people who want something in their mouth after a meal, and regulars who pick up a tin with their coffee, drink or newspaper. That makes flavoured toothpicks a natural fit for kiosks, late-night shops, petrol station shops and tobacconists, where many customers stop briefly and pay at the counter.
Search suggestions such as „flavoured toothpicks for quitting smoking“ show that some people look at the product in that context. As a retailer, do not pick up that thread. Wunder toothpicks are not a medicinal product or a smoking cessation aid, and a claim along those lines could mislead customers. Talk about flavour, the number of pieces and the wood instead.
Toothpicks are small, pointed wooden objects. Placing the display at the counter, out of reach of small children rather than at child height next to sweets or toys, is common sense.
Which flavours and display options are there?
MDH stocks eight Wunder flavours, each ordered as a single tin: Peach-Ice, Blueberry, Grape-Mint, Cherry and Menthol, Icebonbon, Cinnamon-Orange, Pineapple and Apple. Roughly, they fall into cool flavours, fruity flavours and a spiced one, which helps when a customer asks for a recommendation.
For a first listing, two ready-made packages are available. The counter display holds 40 tins, five of each flavour. The floor stand holds 300 tins: 40 each of six flavours and 30 each of Pineapple and Apple. In both cases the display unit is included.
Because the packing unit is one tin, you can refill a display flavour by flavour. Details on all items are on our Wunder toothpicks wholesale page.
How are flavoured toothpicks classified legally?
As of November 2026, the EU has no rules written specifically for flavoured toothpicks. How a product is classified depends on what it is and how it is presented, and authorities in different member states may look at borderline items differently. If you are unsure for your country, ask the manufacturer or your local market surveillance or food authority.
For consumer products not covered by more specific EU legislation, the General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 works as a safety net and has applied since 13 December 2024. Among other things, it expects distributors to check before selling that the product carries an identifier such as a type or batch number and the manufacturer's name with a postal and an electronic address. A quick look at the tins when the goods arrive covers this.
If you resell in another EU country, also check whether national rules require information in the local language. Our goods are intended for the EU market, but labels are not available in every language; ask us if you need documents for a specific country. This section is general information, not legal advice.
Where should you place the display, and how do you sell more?
The till is the right place. Customers see the tins while they wait, the price point suits an add-on purchase, and staff can answer a question in one sentence. Turn the flavour labels towards the customer so the colours and pictures do the selling.
A good habit is to name one flavour when a customer hesitates: a cool one for people who like mints, a fruity one for everyone else. Keep two or three spare tins of the fastest flavour behind the counter so the display never shows gaps.
Watch which compartments empty first and reorder those flavours only. After a few weeks you will know your local mix, and the display stays full without slow flavours piling up. Ideas for the rest of a counter range are on our kiosk wholesale and petrol station shop pages.
What should you say, and avoid saying, in your marketing?
Stick to facts you can show: flavour name, 100 pieces per tin, birch wood, no nicotine and the ingredients from the manufacturer. Pack icons such as „sugar-free“ are statements by the manufacturer; repeat them only as they appear on the pack and do not expand them.
Avoid health and dental promises, statements about breath or dry mouth, and any link to quitting smoking. These are the claims most likely to cause trouble with authorities, platforms and competitors. Online, show the ingredient list as printed on the tin and use your own photos of the product you actually sell.
How do you order Wunder toothpicks from MDH?
MDH sells to registered businesses only. Register as a dealer with your business registration and, for companies from other EU countries, a valid VAT ID. Approval usually takes 1–2 working days, after which you see trade prices.
There is no minimum order value: a single tin, a counter display or a floor stand are all possible, and tins can be added to any order with snacks, drinks or squishies. Within Germany we ship by DHL parcel, usually within 24–48 hours; deliveries to other EU countries are arranged individually, and collection from our Mettmann warehouse is free.
